Pathfinder Basic Survival Course- Adirondacks September 2019
September 20 @ 8:00 am - September 22 @ 12:00 pm$450
The purpose of the Basic Survival Course is to provide students with the knowledge and skills required to better prepare them for survival in a 72-hour Emergency Scenario, using basic items that fall within the 10 C’s of survivability.
Focus will be placed on the multi-functionality of these items for self-aid for injuries, emergency fire craft, shelter construction, water collection and disinfection. In addition, students will learn basic land navigation to prevent becoming lost and facilitate self-rescue, and how to signal for rescue of they should become lost or injured in the wild and unable to self-rescue.
Instructors will teach and ensure proficiency and retention of knowledge and skills by using the EDI (Educate, Demonstrate, Imitate) Method of Training. Students will complete various timed exercises (“deliverables”) both individually and as part of a team. Each deliverable is meant to push you closer to self-reliance. Our goal is always 100% successful demonstration of skill proficiency and successful course completion. If you do not give up on yourself, Instructors will not give up on you.
IMPORTANT NOTE: “basic” does not mean “easy”. It means the focus is on the baseline fundamentals and skills for survival. Expect to walk anywhere from 3-5 miles over the duration of the course, carrying all equipment (approximately 35lbs) as well as materials collected from the environment, across steep and challenging terrain, in all types of weather. Students should expect to be pushed beyond the limits of which they would push themselves. Regardless of your experience or skill level in the woods, the Basic Survival Course is an intense class and is the foundation from which all of the other classes are built.
If you suffer from a medical condition or chronic pain, please bring your prescribed medications with you to the course. If you have recently undergone surgery or have been admitted to the hospital within the last 30 days, DO NOT attempt the course until you have allowed yourself more time to recuperate. Please consult your doctor if you are unsure about whether or not you are medically cleared for this training.
It is highly recommended that you prepare yourself physically at least one month in advance for this or any other course. Hiking/Backpacking/Walking regularly (at least 3 times weekly) for 5 kilometers (3+ miles) working up to a pack weight of 50lbs before the class begins should be sufficient preparation for this course. Keep in mind, nothing is flat in the Adirondacks. Incorporate hills whenever possible. The Pathfinder School is the premiere school of self-reliance in the nation, with a reputation for tough, realistic training; please take it seriously and take the time to prepare yourself physically.
ADMIN NOTES: There will be no camping available at the Adirondack Campus prior to the start of the course or after the course has been completed due to insurance restrictions.
All students must read, agree, and sign a Liability Waiver and Release form for the Pathfinder School LLC and the venue prior to attending the course. This can be signed electronically and submitted or hand carried to the course and given to staff upon arrival. No student will attend training without both forms being on file. Please note we do not share this information with anyone.
The Student Parking Lot for the Adirondack Campus is not located near the Base Camp. Students will not have access to vehicles for the duration of the course. There will not be access to electricity or running water. Fresh water will be available at the Base Camp at all times. Latrines (outhouse) are located within 50 meters of the base camp. Shower facilities are not available. Students will be required to stay in temporary survival shelters that they construct for both nights of this course. Tents, hammock systems, and coolers with food are not authorized at the Adirondack Campus as all gear must be carried from the Student Parking Lot to the Base Camp, and students will not be returning to vehicles until completion of the course. Students will not be permitted to leave the campus and stay at a hotel or purchase food while attending the course. No exceptions are made unless you leave the course entirely.
It is strongly recommended that you take this Basic Survival Course before taking any Intermediate or Advanced level courses. This course is the foundation that all other courses are built upon, and without it, you may not be successful at the other courses.
REFUND POLICY: We understand that things can happen. Up until fourteen (14) days prior to the start of the event, tickets may either be refunded or credited forward (students choice, credits must be used within the same calendar year). However, refunds are not authorized after the 14-day window has passed. In addition, no refunds will be issued for classes you do not show up for, do not pass, or those that you fail to complete for any other reason (including voluntarily withdrawing from a course).
PATCH POLICY: This is a Patch Qualification Course. When a student enrolls, it is fully expected that they intend to certify (and earn the patch) for the Basic Survival Course. If you fall behind due to an inability to complete assigned tasks, but are still participating in training and attempting to complete them, keeping up with the group, and giving it your best, we will continue to work with you so that you can complete the course to the best of your ability. Should your ability to keep up with the group be hindered by an injury or medical issue, we will go above and beyond to help you by providing additional motivation, administering hydration, or aiding in your mobility for as long as you wish to continue the effort (and doing so will not jeopardize your health).
Should you refuse to participate in the training or voluntarily withdraw from the training (please note that these are both forms of quitting the course and no longer putting forth effort towards completion) you will be required to live the school grounds immediately. We do not allow ANY students to remain in camp without instructors present. In addition, we do not allow any students to remain in the after voluntary withdraw from the course.
It is perfectly acceptable to continue the training and complete the course without qualifying for the patch. Simply let the Instructor know that is your desire and continue training. Students that participate, to the best of their ability, in all the training and make it to the end will receive a Certificate of Completion for the Course. Failure to participate in the training being conducted but staying until the last day is not considered course completion.
Students that have met the minimum requirements and completed the course will be issued a Basic patch and a Certificate of Completion signed by the Instructor Staff. Students who did not meet the minimum requirement, but still completed the course, will receive a Certificate of Completion signed by the Instructor Staff (but not the Basic patch). The certificates will note the 2.5 CEU’s that some employers may recognize as continuing education.
