Winter Survival Course- Adirondacks
January 14 @ 8:00 am - January 18 @ 5:00 pm$500
The Winter Survival Course will teach winter-specific skills and emergency survival that will be a blend of both modern and primitive techniques set in a cold weather environment. This course is 5 days in duration.
Students will learn skills in fire craft, survival shelters, and water and food procurement. In addition, students will receive training in land navigation and survival signals. The full spectrum of survival will be taught in a crawl, walk, run format to ensure students are successful and learn these critical skills.
In addition, this course is one of the required modules for the joint Wilderness Survival Instructor Training and Certification course held by the Pathfinder School and Flint & Steel Critical Skills Group.
This is an immersion-style course. Students should be reasonably fit and expect to move up to 5km per day learning and gathering resources. This is a patch-earning course. Upon successful completion, you will earn the coveted Flint & Steel Critical Skills Group patch with the “Winter” rocker and join the ranks of “The Frozen Chosen”. These cannot be purchased and are only available to students that earn them through training.
Required Equipment List: click here!
IMPORTANT: This is a patch-earning course. Regardless of your experience or skill level in the woods, the Basic class is an intense class and lays the foundation for all of our other Patch Courses. Expect to be challenged mentally and physically. You will be required to move cross-country for up to 3-5km per day with all of your gear, in all types of weather, collecting resources needed to complete graded tasks. Do not attempt this course if you have recently been hospitalized, or have undergone surgery, and have not fully recovered. If you suffer from a medical condition (including allergies) or chronic pain, you are required to bring your prescribed medications with you. This includes a bee sting kit if you are allergic.
It is expected that all students, upon enrollment, intend to try and qualify for the Patch. If this is not your desire, that is okay. You can still qualify for a Certificate of Completion if you finish the course. For so long as you continue to train and give it your best, you are welcome to continue training. If you don’t give up on yourself, we will not give up on you. You cannot, however, remain in camp and choose to sit out training events. If you are not participating in training events, you will have to leave school the school grounds. Notice: No refunds will be issued for classes you do not pass (be it medically, academically, voluntarily withdrawing, or unable to complete the course).
Minimum Age Requirement: Any student under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Children 13-17 require their own ticket. This course is not recommended for children under 13.
All Flint & Steel Events require the student to sign the Flint & Steel Critical Skills Group LLC Liability Waiver and Release prior to attendance.
